The Palo Alto Global Protect VPN enables faculty and staff to securely access ACC network resources while working remotely. This article walks users through connecting to the VPN, signing in with their ACCeID, completing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if prompted, and disconnecting from the VPN after their session. It also outlines the available MFA verification methods for first-time setup.

Connecting to the ACC Network Using Palo Alto Global Protect VPN

You need to securely connect to the Austin Community College (ACC) network while working remotely. This guide assumes you have the Palo Alto Global Protect VPN client installed on your ACC-provided laptop.

The Palo Alto Global Protect client creates a virtual private network (VPN) that allows you to securely connect to the ACC network from remote locations.

What if I don't have Global Protect VPN installed on my computer?

  • You can find Global Protect VPN by searching for "Global" on your computer
  • If you cannot find Global Protect VPN, or if it is not installed, submit a TDX Desktop and Mobile Device Support ticket here

Connect to the ACC Network

Complete these steps to connect to the ACC network.

  1. Open the Global Protect application from your computer.
  2. If prompted, enter the portal address remote.austincc.edu.
  3. Click Connect.

  1. Sign In with your ACCeID and Password. 

Complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) 

Access to the ACC network with the Global Protect client requires Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), When signing in, one of the following will occur.

  • If this is your first time using MFA, you must complete a one-time configuration of at least one method of MFA.
  • If you have already set up MFA and this is your first session of the day, you complete your multi-factor authentication now.
  • If you have completed your multi-factor authentication earlier in the day, and you are still authenticated, you will not be prompted for it.
  • If prompted, set up multi-factor authentication. If not prompted, move to the next numbered step.
  1. If prompted, set up multi-factor authentication.

Note: The lettered sub-steps apply only to setting up multifactor authentication. Skip these sub-steps if you are not prompted to configure MFA.

Available MFA Verification Methods

You can choose from several authentication methods. Use the steps below to help you choose and configure at least one type of verification.


Note: If you have phone texting, SMS is often your best first choice. It is secure and easy to set up.

Okta Verify

How you authenticate

On your smartphone, the Okta Verify app prompts you to confirm whether you are logging in or if you need to enter a six-digit code found in the Okta app on your phone. For this type of authentication, you need to install the Okta Verify application on your smartphone.

  1. On your smartphone, install the Okta Verify application.
  2. On your computer, from the Set up multifactor authentication panel, click Setup under this type of authentication. 
  3. Identify your type of phone and click Next. A bar code is presented.
  4. On your phone, use the Okta Verify app to add an account by scanning the barcode displayed on your computer monitor.

Google Authenticator

You are prompted for a six-digit code found in the Google Authenticator app on your smartphone. For this type of authentication, you need to install the Google Authenticator application on your smartphone.

  1. On your smartphone, install the Google Authenticator application.
  2. On your computer, from the Set up multifactor authentication panel, click Setup under this type of authentication. 
  3. Identify your type of phone and click Next. A bar code is presented.
  4. On your phone, using the Google Authenticator app, begin setup by scanning the barcode presented on your computer monitor.
  5. On your computer, click Next.
  6. Enter the six-digit code shown on your phone and click Verify.

SMS Authenticator

You are prompted for a six-digit code given to you by a phone call from an automated system. For this type of authentication, any type of phone works.

  1. On your computer, from the Set up multifactor 
  2. authentication panel, click Setup under this type of authentication. 
  3. Enter your phone number and click Send Code.
  4. Enter the code that is sent to your phone through text messaging and click Verify.

Voice Call Authentication

You are prompted for the answer to a security question you entered during setup.

  1. On your computer, from the Set up multifactor authentication panel, click Setup under this type of authentication. 
  2. Enter your phone number and extension. 
  3. Click Call. You will receive a call from an automated system.
  4. Enter the code given in that call and click Verify.

Security Question

The computer prompts you for the answer to a security question you entered during setup.

  1. On your computer, from the Set up multifactor authentication panel, click Setup under this type of authentication. 
  2. Select a question from the drop-down menu. 
  3. Enter your answer in the Answer field.
  4. Click Save.

Finish Connecting 

After successful authentication, GlobalProtect establishes a secure connection to the ACC network.

  1. If prompted, complete your MFA authentication. See the "How You Authenticate:" instructions in the Security Section above

  • Once verified, GlobalProtect connects your computer to the ACC network and will provide the message, “You are securely connected to the corporate network”.

  • You can now access ACC services as if you were in the office.

Disconnecting from the ACC Network

Complete these steps to disconnect from the ACC network.

  1. To terminate the connection, open the app in the taskbar and click Disconnect at the bottom of the application screen.

Note: 

  • An internet connection is required before connecting to the VPN.
  • MFA is required to access ACC resources remotely.
  • If you're unable to connect, verify your internet connection and ACCeID credentials before contacting the IT Service Desk.
