Creating Custom Groups

Blackboard Ultra allows instructors to organize their students into Groups. Groups are a helpful tool which allow instructors to target assignments, communications, and files for specified groups of students.

Students can either be placed into Groups per instructor support, or you can allow for students to self-assign themselves to groups you have pre-made in the course.

  1. Open the Groups tab in your Blackboard Ultra Course.Navigation & Action Header:  Active Tab: "Groups" is selected in the primary course navigation bar.  Page Title: "Manage Groups".  Action Controls: Top-right corner includes "Import Group Set" (upload icon) and "+ New Group Set" (plus icon) buttons.  Group Sets Table:  Table Headers: "Group Set" and "Members".  Listed Items:  "Custom Small Group Folder (CSGF) #1 - 1st Team Presentation" | 1 Group | Visible to students | Members: 3/10.  "Custom Small Group Set (CSGF) #2 - 2nd Team Presentation" | 1 Group | Visible to students | Members: 4/10.  "Custom Small Group Set (CSGF) #3 - 3rd Team Presentation" | 1 Group | Visible to students | Members: 3/10.  Row Controls: Each group set row features an info icon, a three-dot options menu (...), and a expand/collapse chevron toggle.
  2. Click New Group Set located on the right-hand side of the webpage. This will open a new window to create a Group Set. Label the Group Set with a title.Header & Visibility:  Title Header: Displays editable group set title "New Group Set 9/8/25".  Visibility Dropdown: Located in the top-right corner, currently set to "Hidden from students".  Group Setup Controls:  "Group students" Dropdown: Set to "Custom".  Group Counter: Displays "Number of groups: 0".  Student Assignment Area:  Search Bar: Input box displaying placeholder text "Enter your search term".  Unassigned Roster Header: Section titled "Unassigned students (1-10 of 10)".
    • Note: The Group Set should not be confused with the actual group of students created in the Course - Groups tab.
  3. Next to the Group Students label, click the dropdown menu to select how you would like to assign students into groups.
    • Students can be assigned via Custom Groups, Randomly assigned Groups, or Self-enrollment Groups.
      • Custom groups are instructor chosen groups. Instructors must pre-assign students to groups.
      • Randomly assigned Groups will randomly generate a number of Groups and then pre-assign students to a Group.
      • Self-enrollment Groups allow for students to view the groups available and select which Group they would like to join. Instructors can always intervene and reassign students from these group"Group students" Dropdown Options:  "Custom": Currently selected option (highlighted with a dark background).  "Randomly assign": Selectable creation method.  "Self-enrollment": Disabled/grayed-out option with text reading "Available only for visible group sets".  "Reuse groups:" Section: Displays available prior group sets to duplicate structure:  "Custom Small Group Folder (CSGF) #1 - 1st Team Presentation ..."  "Custom Small Group Set (CSGF) #2 - 2nd Team Presentation"  "Custom Small Group Set (CSGF) #3 - 3rd Team Presentation"  Background Context:  Panel header displays "New Group Set 9/8/25" with a close (X) button in the top left.  The search bar ("Enter your search term") and "Unassigned students" list are visible behind the expanded dropdown.
  4. Within the Group Set, after you have selected how to Group Students, locate the purple addition field (+) line along the bottom of the webpage.
    1. Click this field to then build and label each Group you want within this Group Set.
      • Highlighting the purple addition field (+).Creation Prompt & Control:  Instructional Text: Displays "Select the plus sign to create a custom group and add students."  Interactive Element: A full-width horizontal purple divider line containing a centered purple circle with a white plus (+) icon.  Pagination & Actions:  Items Per Page Selector: Located above the creation divider, displaying a dropdown set to "48" followed by "items per page".  Footer Action Buttons: Located at the bottom right corner, featuring a secondary "Cancel" button and a primary black "Save" button.
      • After clicking the purple addition field (+).Group Card Header:  Displays the default editable group title "New Group 1".  Features a three-dot options menu (...) in the upper-right corner of the group section.  Group Card Details:  Description Field: Contains a pencil icon next to the placeholder button "Add a group description".  Membership Status: Displays "No members" in the lower-right corner of the group container box.  Surrounding Controls:  Above the group card, a horizontal divider line with a centered plus (+) icon allows creating additional custom groups.  Footer Action Buttons: Features a "Cancel" button and an enabled primary black "Save" button in the bottom-right corner.
    2. After clicking the purple addition field (+) there is a prompt which appears with a box to label the new group in the field, New Group 1.
    3. This is the first official Group of this student Group Set.
    4. Label the Group and then add a Description as is appropriate.
  5. Click the three dots alongside a student’s name and text box to Edit Group Membership. Assign the student to the Group you have created within this set.
    • Alternatively, instructors can create a new Group using the +Create a new group drop-down field.Student Assignment Dropdown Menu:  Selected student card "[Student Name]" is highlighted in dark gray with a active menu toggle (...).  Expanded pop-over menu displays status text 1 participant selected.  Action items include "+ Create a new group" and the target group option "Test Apple Group 1".  Unassigned Roster Context:  Header shows "Unassigned students (1-10 of 10)" below the search input field.  Additional unassigned student cards appear beneath the open dropdown menu.  Target Group Container:  Located below the roster, displaying the group title "Test Apple Group 1" and description box "Apple Group 1".
  6. Once a student has been assigned to a Group, their name and profile will now appear beneath that Group on the webpage.
    • Complete this process for all students to assign all students to Groups."New Group 1" Container (Empty):  Header: Displays group title "New Group 1" and a three-dot options menu (...).  Description: Displays clickable placeholder text "Add a group description" with a pencil icon.  Footer Status: Displays "No members" in the bottom-right corner.  Group Creation Divider:  Separating the two group cards is a horizontal purple line featuring a centered purple circle with a white plus (+) icon for adding additional groups.  "Test Apple Group 1" Container (Populated):  Header: Displays group title "Test Apple Group 1" and a three-dot options menu (...).  Description: Displays the text "Apple Group 1" with an edit pencil icon on the far right.  Member Area: Displays an assigned student card for "[Student Name]" with a three-dot options menu (...).  Footer Status: Displays "1 member" in the bottom-right corner.

Be sure to click Save in the lower-right-hand corner of the webpage screen to save and activate student groups.
