Blackboard Ultra: How to Send Messages to Students

Panel Header & Notice:  Displays panel title "New Message" with a purple close (X) button in the top left.  Features a blue informational banner: "When sending an email message, your email address will be visible to recipients replying to your message."  Recipient Selection Dropdown (To: Field):  Active input field labeled "Enter a course member or group".  Expanded options menu lists:  "All course members"  "All instructors"  "All students"  "[Instructor Name]" (labeled Instructor)  "[Student Name]" (labeled Student)  Message Editor & Action Controls:  Central placeholder area displays "Start a new message" and "Select or enter a recipient to begin." Sending Messages: Step-by-Step

Highlighted Navigation Control:  "Messages" Tab: Outlined with a red rectangular box and pointed to by a red arrow in the primary left navigation panel. A white notification dot appears next to the label indicating unread updates.  Base Navigation Panel:  Vertical left navigation list includes options: "Institution Page", "Activity", "Courses", "Calendar", "Messages" (active tab), "Grades", "Assist", and "Tools".  Global Messages Dashboard:  Page title "Messages" displayed at the top.  Lists courses with message counts and quick actions:  "Ultra Sandbox": Displays an indicator for 1 message and a "New Message" button.  "Road Cycling - Routing, Riding, & Repair": Displays an indicator for 1 message and a "New Message" button.  "Basic Extemporaneous Compounding (Non-Sterile)": Displays a disabled "Messages off" status badge.  "English Composition II": Displays an indicator for 1 message and a "New Message" button.   1. Select Messages from the left-hand menu.
  2. Choose a course and click the New Message icon.
  3. Type recipient names and select from the suggested list.
  4. Write your message (there is no subject line, so start with the most important information).
  5. (Optional) Send an email copy to recipients to increase the chance students will see it.

Highlighted Navigation Control:  "Messages 1" Tab: Enclosed in a red rectangle with a red arrow pointing to it in the top navigation bar. Displays a purple circle badge with the number 1 indicating an unread course message.  Top Navigation Toolbar:  Displays tabs for "Content", "Calendar", "Announcements", "Discussions", "Gradebook", "Messages 1" (highlighted tab), "Analytics", "Groups", and "Achievements".  Upper right features "Course Settings" (marked OPEN), "Student Preview", and a "New Message" button.  Course Messages Main Panel:  Section header reads "Course Messages".  Message List Items:  First Message: Sent by "(You)" (with a purple 1 unread badge) to "To: You" on 6/9/26, 1:52 PM. Body text reads "The Quiz 1 submissions have been packaged. Download now. (0 KB)". Features a trash can delete icon on the right.  Second Message: Sent by "(You)" to "To: All course members" on 6/3/26, 2:17 PM. Body text reads "test1".   • Open your course and select Messages.
  • Click New Message to create and send a message.

Tip: You can message students directly from an assignment’s Student Activity page, for example if a student submits work late.

Managing Messages

  • Unread messages appear first and are marked with a red circle.
  • Threaded conversations group all responses together for easy tracking.
  • Delete messages if needed, but note that you cannot delete individual responses.
  • Add participants to a conversation unless it was sent to the entire class.
