How to create an Assignment

From the Course Content page, select the plus sign wherever you want to add an assignment. In the menu, select Create to open the Create Item panel and select Assignment. When you create an assignment, a gradebook item is created automatically.

Content Area Controls (Left): Add Content Icon: A red box highlights the active plus/close button (×) on the section divider line. Dropdown Menu: A red box outlines the top option, "Create" (positioned above Auto-Generate Modules, Copy Content, Upload, Cloud Storage, Content Market, and Content Collection). Create Item Slide-Out Panel (Right): Panel Title: "Create Item". Course Content Items: Lists Learning module, Folder, Document, Link, Teaching tools with LTI connection, and SCORM package. Assessment Section: A red box outlines the "Assignment" item (located between Test and Form). Participation and Engagement Section: Displays options including Discussion.

New Assignment Page

Header & Global Controls: Displays assignment title "New Assignment 8/6/26". Top-right options include an "Auto-generate assignment" button and a visibility selector set to "Hidden from students". Navigation Tabs: Displays tabs for "Content and Settings" (currently selected), "Submissions (0)", and "Student Activity". Instructions Section (Main Content Area): Displays an interactive content block labeled "Instructions" with placeholder text "Click to add text or drag and drop files here". Features a "Print" button in the upper-right corner of the section. Assignment Settings Sidebar (Right Panel): Displays a gear icon (⚙) to open detailed settings. Due date: Defaults to Tomorrow, Fri Aug 7, 2026 11:59 PM (CDT). Grade category: Set to Assignment. Submission Details: Configured for File upload and Text entry. Grading: Displays Points | 100 maximum points with manual posting enabled. Attempts allowed: Set to 1 attempt. Accommodations: Shows 1 student with active accommodations. Originality Report: Displays link to Enable SafeAssign.

After creating an assignment you will be able to edit that assignment. Enter a descriptive title so students can easily find the assignment among your course content. On the Course Content page, the title appears as the link students select to view the materials. If you don’t add a title, “New Assignment” and the date appear in the content list. If you don’t add content, the assignment won’t appear on the Course Content page.

Add Assignment instructions, content, and adjust settings

  • Under Instructions, enter the Instructions and content for the assignment.
  • You can drag and drop files from your local device or use the insert content button to access a menu for course content types.
  • Due date and other settings can be adjusted on the right side of the page.
