Assignment Settings

If any students in your course have accommodation, they appear in the Assignment Settings section. You can set accommodations for students and make them exempt from certain course requirements, such as assignment due dates and time limits. To modify accommodations, go to the Roster and open a student’s menu. You can also access it from the Submission page or gradebook.

On the right-hand side of the New Assignment page, under Assignment Settings, you can view the settings selected for your assignment. To choose and apply different settings, select the Settings icon (gear) button to open a new panel.

Details & Information

The section Details & Information provides options for assignment submission.

Panel Header: Displays item context "Reading Questions" above the main panel title "Assignment Settings". Details & Information Controls: Due date: Contains input fields set to date 4/7/23 with a calendar icon and time 12:00 AM with a clock icon. Prohibit late submissions: Unchecked checkbox with description In progress attempts will be submitted automatically at the due date and time. Prohibit new attempts after due date: Checked checkbox (green indicator) with description Students can't start new attempts once the due date and time has passed. Allow class conversations: Checked checkbox (green indicator). Collect submissions offline: Disabled/grayed-out checkbox with explanatory text You can't collect submissions offline because students have started their submissions.

  • Due date. Due dates appear on the calendar and in the activity stream. Late submissions appear with a Late label in the course gradebook. You can prohibit students from submitting work after the due date.
  • Prohibit late submissions. Enforce a hard deadline and prevent a late submission. In-progress and saved attempts will auto-submit at the due date. Students will receive a submission receipt email.
    • If students have submitted attempts, you cannot change the due date to a date in the past. If the due date has passed, you can’t select the Prohibit late submission setting.
  • Allow class conversations. What if your students have questions about an assignment? You can allow conversations within an assignment, and anyone can contribute. As the conversation develops, it appears only with the relevant assignment.
  • Collect submissions offline. This will create an assignment like normal, but students will not be able to submit anything online.  This method will allow you to collect the offline submissions and still grade them through Blackboard Ultra's gradebook.

Grading & Submissions

Grading & Submissions provides options for assignment type and grading criteria.

Anonymous grading: "Hide student names": Unchecked checkbox to mask student identities during grading. Evaluation options: "2 graders per student": Unchecked checkbox to assign multiple evaluators per submission. "Peer review": Unchecked checkbox to enable student peer evaluation. Assessment grade: "Post assessment grades automatically": Unchecked checkbox with description Automatically posts the grade when the assessment is graded. The feature covers automatically and manually graded assignments, and tests with auto-graded question types. Turn the setting off if you want to manually control grade publication.

Grade category. You can change the assignment’s grade category to be part of one of the custom gradebook categories you set up in your course. You can create new categories to customize how coursework is grouped in your course. Custom categories can be useful when you set up the overall grade.

Attempt allowed. You can let your students submit more than one attempt at an assignment. When you allow multiple attempts, you can also choose how the final grade is calculated.

Grade using. From the Grade using menu, select an existing grading schema such as Points. You can change the grading schema at any time, and the change will appear to students and in your gradebook.

Maximum points. Add a number value between 0 and 99,999 for your assignment. If you leave this field blank, the number will default to 100.

Panel Header: Displays the section title "Grading & Submissions". Grading Controls: Grade category: Dropdown menu set to "Assignment". Attempts allowed: Dropdown menu set to "1". Grade using: Dropdown menu set to "Letter". Maximum points: Number input field set to "100".

Enable Assessment grade. Automatically post a student’s grade once grading is completed. Turn the setting off if you want to manually control grade publication.
