Enabling Respondus Guide

The Respondus LockDown Browser (RLB) is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a Blackboard Ultra course. To enable RLB for a Blackboard Ultra assessment, use the following procedural steps:

  1. From Details & Actions and under Books & Tools, select View course & institution tools.Main Area (Course Content):  Top navigation set to the "Content" tab.  Displays a list of course items including "Example Test", "Course Evaluation", "Online Tutoring", and "College Policies & Student Support Services".  Highlighted Callout (Red Box & Arrow):  A red arrow points from the main area to a red rectangular box highlighting "Books & Tools" within the right-hand panel.  Sidebar Panel ("Details & Actions"):  Roster: View everyone in your course  Course Image: Edit display settings  Attendance: Mark attendance  Books & Tools: View course & institution tools (Highlighted by red box)  Question Banks: Manage banks  Qwickly Attendance: Launch
  2. From the Books & Course Tools side panel, scroll down to Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard and click to launch the tool.

  3.  If you are launching the RLB Dashboard for the first time in Blackboard Ultra, you will be prompted to authorize the 3rd party tool integration. This step will only need to be performed ONCE. The authorization will carry over to all other Ultra courses where you are enrolled as an instructor user. Select Allow to permit the integration.Header & Graphic: Features a key icon inside a circle above the title "Blackboard Learn Authorization".  Request Description: Displays text reading "The application Respondus LockDown Browser, developed by RESPONDUS INC., would like to integrate with Blackboard Learn at local on your behalf with the following permissions:"  Permissions List:  Act on your behalf when you're not logged into Blackboard Learn  Read data from areas of Blackboard Learn to which you have access  Write data to areas of Blackboard Learn to which you have access  Action Buttons: Displays "Deny" (gray button) and "Allow" (black button) beneath the prompt "Please allow or deny this integration."
  4. From the list of assessments in the course, locate the desired test or quiz and click Settings from the chevron icon to the left of the assessment title.
    Header & Navigation:  Displays the "LockDown Browser" interface with tabs for "Dashboard" (active), "Getting Started", "Video Tutorials", "Guides & Support", and "Other Systems".  Highlighted Callouts (Red Arrow & Box):  Red Arrow: Points to the green chevron drop-down button to the left of "Example Test".  Red Box: Outlines "Settings" inside the expanded drop-down menu (which also contains Review Early Exits).  Test Table Status:  Displays columns for "LockDown Browser" and "Respondus Monitor", both showing "Not Required" for "Example Test".
  5. Choose Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. Expand Advanced Settings to require LockDown Browser to view additional settings. Please review the Respondus Allowing students to exit early from an exam Q&A article, the Respondus Accessing external web domains in LockDown Browser Q&A article, and the Respondus Can students use a Calculator during a test that requires LockDown Browser Q&A article. Note that for exams using only LockDown Browser (not Respondus Monitor) the iPad setting is automatically enabled. Click Save + Close when finished adjusting the settings.LockDown Browser Settings (Highlighted by Red Arrows):  Top Arrow: Points to the selected radio button "Require LockDown Browser for this exam".  Middle Arrow: Points to the expanded "Advanced Settings" section header, where "Require LockDown Browser to view post-exam feedback and results" is checked.  Respondus Monitor Section:  Radio button set to "Don't require Respondus Monitor for this exam" (selected).  Action Buttons (Highlighted by Red Arrow):  Bottom Arrow: Points directly to the blue "Save + Close" button next to "Cancel".
  6. The RLB-enabled assessment now displays to the student with the “Proctored” branding. Students attempting to access the assessment from a standard browser (Chrome, Firefox, MS Edge, or Safari) will either be redirected to download the RLB application from Respondus to their device or, if RLB is already installed on their device, the application will launch automatically and redirect the student to the test in the secure browser.Item Header:  Title reads "Example Test" with a test document icon on the left and a drag handle.  Visibility toggle set to "Visible to students" (with eye icon).  Highlighted Callout (Red Box & Arrow):  A red arrow points to a red rectangular box highlighting the "Proctored" label (featuring a shield icon) located next to "No due date".  Item Controls:  Three-dot options menu (...) located in the upper-right corner of the item card.
