How to Upgrade macOS to Latest Version Using Self Service (No Admin Access Required)

Overview

Every ACC-provided Mac comes with a special app called Self Service. Think of it as a private App Store where you can safely install software and system updates without needing an administrator password. One of the best ways to use it is for updating your macOS version. By using Self Service, you can handle the update yourself whenever it's most convenient for you—no need to call the Service Desk or wait for a technician to help.

Steps

Before you begin: Please make sure your laptop is plugged into a power outlet. Updating your system uses a lot of energy, and your computer should not turn off during this process.

  1. Open Self Service: Look for the colorful ACC star icon in the bar at the bottom of your screen (the Dock) and click it once.

  2. Find the Updates: On the left side of the window, click on Browse and then select All.

  3. Start the Upgrade: Look for the icon for the newest macOS version. When you find it, click the Upgrade button directly below it.

  4. Wait for Completion: Your Mac will now handle the rest! It will download and install the new software automatically. This usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and your computer may restart during this time.
