This article is a how-to walk through on mapping shared network drives to a Macbook. This article applies to all Mac users working with Austin Community College who have existing access on a Windows account to assigned network shared drives. Access to shared network drives on a Macbook require that the below requirements be met -
1. The acceid/username of the Mac user is in the ACC domain.
NOTE:
● Managers and/or sponsors should request ACC domain access for the user when submitting an employee onboarding request form.
● Existing employees should request ACC domain access for their acceid/username before mapping any shared network drives.
2. The Macbook is connected to ACC LAN or the ACC Secure wireless network.
NOTE: Cloudpath certificate installation is required for access to ACC Secure wireless network.
3. The user has existing access to the shared drives.

Steps To Map a Shared Network Drive on a MacBook
1. Open Finder
2. Press ⌘ + K
3. In the Connect to Server dialogue box, enter the path smb://server/path/folder (see the example below).
NOTE: if trying to connect a Windows network share, the universal naming convention (UNC) using back slashes [e.g. \\server\path\folder] needs to be changed using forward slashes instead and prefaced with smb:// [e.g. smb://server/path/folder]
4. After entering the share path, press the + button on the bottom right of the Connect to Server dialogue box to add the share to the Favorite Servers list.
5. Press Connect in the Connect to Server dialogue box
6. When the security box requesting to click Connect with the network shared connection attempt, click Connect
7. In the authentication box, enter your credentials.
- Connect As: Registered User
- Name = acc\acceid [e.g. acc\a1234567 for Adam whose ID is 1234567]
- Password = your Windows password (i.e. the password you enter when logging into the ACCeID account manager or Okta)
8. Check the box next to the option to Remember this password in my keychain
9. Press Connect in in the authentication box after entering credentials
10. Once the credentials have been accepted on the network, the shared folder will open on the desktop. While the shared folder is open, click on View in the top menu and select Show Path Bar
11. Click and hold the path displayed on the path bar and drag to the dock to save as a shortcut.
FAQs
I get “unknown user name or bad password” when attempting to log on to the ACC domain in the remote desktop, why?
Unknown user name or bad password error response points to your account not having access to the ACC domain. Please reach out to the Service Desk to submit a request to have your user name added to the ACC domain for the net shares to properly map to your MacBook.
I don’t use my acceid to log on. I use my first initial, last name or other type of user name. Does this prevent me from mapping network drives on my MacBook?
Some ACC employees have a legacy method to logging on other than the current standard of acceid as the user name. Those legacy user names can gain access to the ACC domain for net share mapping on a MacBook with the help of Service Desk.
