ACC is Reducing Google Workspace Storage Effective December 1, 2026

Overview

Austin Community College District (ACC) is implementing individual Google Workspace storage limits to responsibly manage institutional resources following Google's transition from unlimited educational storage to a finite pooled storage model.

Why is this necessary?

Google no longer provides unlimited storage to educational institutions. ACC IT has taken steps to manage overall institutional storage usage, including removing Google Shared Drives from the student environment in 2025.

Individual storage limits are now necessary for faculty and staff to help ACC responsibly manage available Google Workspace storage.

What is changing?

Effective December 1, 2026, ACC employee Google Workspace accounts will have a 25 GB storage limit.

More than 90% of ACC employees currently use less than 25 GB of storage. However, some accounts are approaching the limit. Employees should review their current storage usage, remove or relocate unnecessary content, and continue managing their storage to remain below 25 GB.

What is included in the 25 GB limit?

The 25 GB storage limit applies to storage used across Google Workspace services, including:

What happens if I reach the 25 GB limit?

When an account reaches its storage limit, critical Google Workspace functionality may be impacted until storage usage is reduced below 25 GB.

For example:

  • You cannot send or receive email.
  • Messages sent to you may be returned to the sender.
  • Other Google Workspace services may also be affected.

To avoid service interruptions, monitor your storage usage and proactively remove or appropriately relocate unnecessary content before reaching the limit.
